0 METER ABOVE SEA LEVEL

ONE MILLON YEAR-OLD PIER

Artists began exhibiting their works outdoors in twentieth century. But now in 2014, I discovered the essential meaning of displaying works inside the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sapporo and found my own way to produce my work to be shown indoors.  I successfully had the pier, which was once located outside, display its figure inside the museum.

The pier in the photos was constructed one million years ago.  Sapporo City, which currently contains a mountain range, was actually surrounded by ocean at that time, and this pier was constructed at 0 meter above sea level.

The passageway of the pier is about 60 centimeters wide and is located about 2 meters above the museum floor.  (The floor represents sea level one million years ago at the very place where the museum is located now)  The total length is about 25 meters.  The colonnades that support it were originally under water.  The pier is only wide enough to allow one person to walk along it, and it is strong enough to hold up to five people in a single line.  Visitors can envision the ocean a million years ago while walking on it.  This work shows that the history of mankind is just a glimpse compared to Mother Earth.
